Meet Our Donors-Betty Bowersox

Betty BowersoxBETTY BOWERSOX

An ASME member since her graduation from college, Betty Bowersox is a project manager at Nooter/Eriksen in Fenton, Missouri. She feels she owes where she is and who she is today to ASME. “ASME offers a non-threatening culture, especially to women, and I was smart enough to take advantage of all that was available to me along the way. The Society has given me a backbone to be more assertive than when I was younger, and has definitely helped me advance my career.”

The highlights of Betty’s career are all connected to her relationship to ASME. During 1997-2000, she served as Regional Vice President of Region 7, an opportunity that helped her hone her leadership skills. During that same period, Betty was invited to speak at the Young Engineers Forum in Tokyo.
Betty’s record of volunteerism within the society is expansive, beginning in the late ‘80s when she served on the Regional Government Relations committee for the Northern Plains Region, and continuing today with her service on the Committee on Organization and Rules and the Center for Professional Development Practice & Ethics Board.

Betty has made a planned gift to The ASME Foundation with a bequest specifically designated to help women develop as leaders in the field of mechanical engineering. She believes that the Foundation provides a way for ASME members to give back to an organization that provides invaluable  services for its members and for the profession.

Betty was welcomed into the Archimedes Club at Congress in November, 2006.. “The Archimedes Club is a great thing, a fellowship of sorts, and even for younger people who may not be thinking of estate planning yet, it offers an insight into giving back. “ And although Betty made her planned gift with no awareness of The Archimedes Club, she is quick to point out the value of the recognition and encouragement it affords to donors.

Looking to the future of engineering, Betty sees time-tested trends continuing, as engineering continues to make things work faster, better, safer, and more economically. Betty chose a career in mechanical engineering because as a young student she excelled in science and math. She knew even then that the engineering profession offered her a stable future and room to grow. She knows that still holds for young women in mechanical engineering today.
