“We will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our sadness . . . We will prevail . . .” Nikki Giovanni University Distinguished Professor, Poet, Activist VA Tech
The tragic events on the VA Tech campus on April 16, 2007 touched thousands of persons across our great nation. The lost promise of young lives cut short, the lost wisdom of seasoned mentors, and the collective loss of innocence resonated beyond our borders and throughout the globe. Those of us in the engineering and academic communities were especially stricken, knowing that many of the victims were part of our communities.
We cannot undo the senseless violence of that April morning. However, we can “continue to invent the future” by making it possible for other bright and highly motivated students to thrive in the VA Tech environment.
ASME has given The ASME Foundation $25,000 as a challenge grant to establish scholarships in memory of those whose lives were prematurely taken and in honor of those survivors whose courage was heroic. We invite you to join in this campaign to assure that the loss and the courage of that day will be remembered. In that way, ASME members will assist Hokies of generations past, present and future, engineers, scientists and teachers “prevail” over the events of one fateful day.
This fund will be managed by The ASME Foundation so that ASME scholarships can be awarded in perpetuity to Virginia Tech Engineering Graduate Students. The ASME Foundation will grow this fund over time to ensure that this memorial can continue to pay tribute to lives lost and the heroism displayed by so many.
