A bequest is a gift of cash, securities or real property made upon the donor's death, through provisions in his or her will or living trust. The amount of the gift is exempt from estate taxes. Irrevocable bequest instruments (e.g. contract to make a will or testamentary contract) received by the ASME Foundation shall be considered on a case-by-case basis. Such bequests will be credited, recognized or commemorated at the value established at the time of probate and/or at the fair market value on the date of the transfer of the asset(s). New bequest expectancies will be credited at the level indicated by the donor if the donor is or will be age 70 or greater, and has signed a contract prepared by the charity to make a will or living trust to the charity. Bequest expectancies from donors younger than age 70 will generally not be credited but will be listed as expectancies.
Bequest intentions, commitments of unpaid insurance policies and other irrevocable deferred gifts will be recorded at present value based on life expectancy and the value established in writing by the donor through a bequest intention form, a deferred pledge agreement, a contract to make a will, a letter of intent, or a copy of appropriate sections of the will of the insurance or trust document, etc.
- Such gift commitments will be permanently commemorated in accordance with the donor's specific request and intent, only when the funds are irrevocably committed to ASME Foundation or after the death of the donor when the gift is received.
- Bequest intentions for which the donor does not indicate a specific gift value and/or does not provide an estimate of a residuary bequest will not be credited.
If you plan to make a bequest to The ASME Foundation, the following language is suggested:
"I give, devise, and bequeath to the ASME Foundation, a charitable corporation existing under and by virtue of a charter granted by the State of New York and with its headquarters in New York City, New York County and New York State, $...(or, the following described property, or securities.)"
If you choose to name The ASME Foundation as a beneficiary in your will, we would like to know of your intentions. The Foundation would then be able to show appreciation of your generosity, and properly include your support in planning for The Foundation's future. |
