Charitable Giving

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

A charitable annuity is an irrevocable gift in exchange for a guaranteed fixed income for life that is based upon the donor's age at the time of the gift. In other words, one makes a donation to The ASME Foundation and the Foundation agrees to pay a yearly income from the donation until the death of the benefactor.  The foundation then keeps the remaining funds. If the donated assets consist of appreciated securities, capital gains taxes may be avoided. Because the Foundation will not receive the gift portion until the death of the final income beneficiary, gift annuities will be credited based upon the donor's age when the gift is made. For recognition purposes, the face value of the annuity gift can be used. Proposed guidleine for the minimum charitable gift annuity is $25,000, although lower values will be considered.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST

A Charitable Remainder Trust is an irrevocable transfer of assets to a trust, naming The ASME Foundation as the only ultimate beneficiary or as one of several qualified charitable beneficiaries. The donor receives a life income of a set amount or a fixed percentage of the donation on an annual basis. A donor generally receives an immediate tax deduction and may add to the principal of a Charitable Remainder Trust in future years. If the donated assets consist of appreciated securities, capital gains taxes also may be avoided.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER ANNUITY TRUST

A Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust allows cash, property, securities and other assets transferred into a trust. The ASME Foundation will oversee the trust and administer a fixed income for life or for a term of years to the donor or another beneficiary. When the trust terminates, the remaining assets in the trust are transferred to the ASME Foundation.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST

The Charitable Lead Trust is an income producing asset (in the form of accrued interest) that is placed in a trust.  The income interest is a contribution to the ASME Foundation for a designated period of time, after which the trusted asset is returned to the donor or non-charitable beneficiaries named by the donor. The donor may gain immediate tax advantages or may reduce gift or estate taxes when the assets are passed to children or grandchildren.
