Meet another of our talented scholarship winners in an excerpt from his Press Release.
Travis is the son of Debby and Dennis White and has lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan his entire life. He graduated from Sault Area High School with a 4.067 GPA as Valedictorian of his class and has truly defined “scholar” through his pursuit of academic excellence over the past twelve years of his life. He has been a member of the National Society of High School Scholars for three years and was inducted to the Sault High School National Honors Society during his Junior year.
Travis served as a Student Council representative while also fulfilling the role of Sault Area Public School District Curriculum Improvement Team student representative and student representative to the Manufacturing Technology Program Committee. He is a Junior Rotarian and scholarship recipient for the Rotary Summer Youth Leadership Conference. Travis served as the Vice President of the Youth Advisory Council and was also a Peer Mentor at Sault Area Middle School for two years. He is a Big Brothers and Big Sisters Mentor and was a FIRST Robotics Member for three years, which eventually led to his becoming a FIRST Student Ambassador. In May 2006 he was awarded with the rank of Eagle Scout for his strong determination and extraordinary efforts in Scouting.
In his spare time Travis enjoys fishing, camping, traditional archery, playing guitar, and writing. As a member of Trout Unlimited and the Sault Area Sportsmen’s Club, he uses his talents to teach fly fishing seminars in the spring and helps with a program called ‘Fishing Buddies’ in which he mentors local youth once a week teaching basic fishing skills along with good sportsmanship. He uses his speaking and writing skills along with his passion for the outdoors to write articles that have been published in the Sault Evening News, the Michigan Outdoor News, Field & Stream and Trout Unlimited Online to promote catch & release fishing, safe boating practices, and conservation issues.
Travis was recognized this year for his tremendous commitment to others and his community. He received the Michigan Student Service Award Certificate of Excellence, the Hometown Community Spirit Award, the 9 & 10 News “Best of the Class” Service Award, the Air Force Recruiting Service Award and Certificate of Excellence, the E.U.P. Principal’s Award, and the Cup of 1923, awarded annually to a graduating student that excels in character, leadership, scholarship and service.
Travis will attend Michigan Technological University in the fall as a Leading Scholar and has been selected to be a member of MTU’s highly competitive Pavlis Institute for Global Technological Leadership. The Pavlis Institute will provide enriched curriculum, special seminars, and an international study aboard experience. In addition, Travis has been inducted into the Mlii Honors Institute and hopes to pursue a career in Nanotechnological Engineering.
He is honored and grateful to the ASME Foundation for selecting him for the ASME Foundation-ASME Auxiliary FIRST Clarke Scholarship and is quoted as saying “This award alleviates much stress associated with the challenge of financing my future education. This is a difficult point in my life for the reason that there are a lot of choices that I must make in addition to an even greater number of responsibilities that I must fulfill. Knowing that there are generous people and organizations that exist and are willing to assist students during these times in their lives is a comforting thought, and again, I am most sincerely thankful for having been chosen to receive this scholarship”.
The ASME Foundation is extremely proud to congratulate Travis White on his successes thus far and the prospect of a career in Mechanical Engineering! Click here to learn more about The ASME - ASME Auxiliary FIRST Clarke scholarship. |
